What is Solar PV panel and how does it work?
Solar Panels use the irradiance (light power) from the sun to knock photons into electrons inside the atoms of tiny photo cells contained in each solar panel. This generates an electrical charge which is then harnesses and inverted through an inverter box to make it useful electricity for your home, farm or business.
Do Solar PV systems require maintenance?
Solar PV systems do not need specific maintenance as there are no moving parts. They do, however, require you to check on the Solar PV inverter when reading the meters and ensure that they do not have any fault codes on them. This should be done quarterly as a minimum, but ideally monthly (especially in Summer months).
In spite of this, some insurers are now requesting Solar PV Safety checks to be Carried out.
It is also sensible for you to check that the glass on the panels is clean as the dirty glass can cause you to lose output and may require the panels to be cleaned.
Is a Solar PV system still a good investment?
Yes, providing that you have a use for the electricity generated from the Solar PV during the day. Although thee is not currently a FIT scheme in place for Solar PV; it can still pay to install a system with a payback of under 6-7 years on some installs. Typically you would receive the best payback from a medium size solar systems from 10-50kW which would generally require a 3 phase connection but any size system is considered and can still be an attractive investment.
How can I get the most from my Solar PV system?
The simplest way to make the most of your Solar PV system is to ensure that you use as much of the adjustable electric appliances in your house, farm or business at around noon or at least during daylight hours. This is the time when you will typically be generating the most electricity from your system. Most domestic appliances come with adjustable timers so that you can set them off even if you are not around. If your appliances do not have adjustable timers then you can purchase plug socket timers to give you the same effect.
What do I do if my inverter stops working or has a warning light?
The best solution is to have a look at your inverter display and check to see if there is a fault code showing. The fault code may say something like "VAC FAILURE" or "IR FAULT". The best place to start is by switching off the AC & DC isolators that are usually installed next to your Inverter, wait 10 seconds after the system has shut down then switch these back on. After the system has rebooted if the fault is still present then you should check to see if the Circuit Breaker has tripped in your consumer unit and switch it back on if required.
