Solar PV systems generally require minimal maintenance, as they have no moving parts. However, it is important to regularly monitor the solar PV inverter while reading the meters to ensure there are no fault codes. We recommend performing this check at least quarterly, though monthly checks are ideal, especially during the summer months.

Additionally, some insurers are now requesting solar PV safety checks to be conducted.

It’s also wise to keep an eye on the cleanliness of the panel glass. Dirty panels can lead to reduced energy output, so regular cleaning may be necessary to maintain optimal performance.

To maximize the benefits of your solar PV system, the simplest strategy is to use adjustable electrical appliances in your home, farm, or business during peak sunlight hours, typically around noon. This is when your system generates the most electricity. Many domestic appliances come with adjustable timers, allowing you to schedule their operation even when you’re not home. If your appliances lack built-in timers, you can easily purchase plug socket timers to achieve the same effect.

If you are unavailable during the day to utilize your solar-generated electricity, consider installing a solar immersion charger, such as the My Energy Eddi, into your hot water tank. This device captures surplus energy throughout the day, heating your water tank and providing you with free hot water at the end of a sunny day.

Another option is to invest in a battery storage system, especially if you do not have a hot water tank or have a combi boiler. A battery storage system allows you to store excess energy generated during the day for use in the evening, helping you save on electricity costs.

It’s important to remember that your solar PV inverter typically comes with a 5 to 10-year warranty. If you experience a fault, be sure to get your inverter replaced before the warranty period expires.

If your inverter stops working or displays a warning light, the first step is to check the inverter display for any fault codes, such as “VAC FAILURE” or “IR FAULT.”

Begin by switching off the AC and DC isolators typically located next to your inverter. Wait for 10 seconds after the system has fully shut down, then switch the isolators back on. After the system reboots, check if the fault persists.

If the issue remains, inspect your consumer unit to see if the circuit breaker has tripped, and reset it if necessary.
